Key findings include
- A possible 60% increase in international vessel traffic by 2040, from a current average of 3,186 vessels per year to 5,299 vessels per year;
- Tanker traffic of all types is forecasted to increase considerably, by as much as 611%;
- The North Coast of British Columbia is projected to see the largest growth in international shipping, with a potential increase of 217%;
- Escort tug traffic in the Salish Sea could increase tenfold by 2040.
This research provides critical data for policymakers, industry stakeholders, Indigenous communities, and the public to plan for and manage the impacts of increased vessel traffic, and highlights the need for a cumulative approach to ensure the future of shipping on the Pacific Coast is safe, sustainable, and inclusive.
