Canada is funding a new organisation to research best practice and provide guidance for nationwide marine vessel safety

Safety focus – July 8th, 2015

The new institution will be named Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping and will receive $8.85m from the Canadian government.

Lisa Raitt, Canadian minister of transport, said: “This is an important initiative not only for the promotion of safe and responsible marine shipping but for the growth of Canada’s economy.”

Clear Seas will support Canada’s tanker safety system, including ship specifications and inspections.

Richard Wiefelspuett, executive director of Clear Seas, said the first task will be to create a catalogue of risk for all types of shipping in Canadian waters.
