Vancouver, BC, March 2, 2021 – Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping is pleased to announce the establishment of an Indigenous internship program. Supported by Mitacs, a Canadian not-for-profit organization that drives innovation through the creation of internships, Clear Seas is proposing to provide funding for interns from Indigenous communities.
“The program aims to develop partnerships with Indigenous communities across Canada by collaborating on research projects of mutual interest to communities and Clear Seas,” says Sarah Thomas, Manager of Indigenous and Coastal Community Relations at Clear Seas. The selected interns will conduct research on a number of maritime topics relating to safety and sustainability from an Indigenous perspective.
Support and mentorship will be provided by Clear Seas and its network of partners and collaborators. Study areas include applying Traditional Knowledge to the assessment of sensitivity of coastal areas, ship traffic patterns, underwater noise, oil spill preparedness and response, and other topics.
Applicants are invited to apply from all regions of Canada. Successful candidates will be able to work remotely. The deadline to apply to the program is Friday, March 12. Selected interns will start on the program in May 2021.

Clear Seas is a not-for-profit independent research centre funded by Canada’s provincial and federal governments as well as industry. It provides impartial information on marine shipping in Canada to policy makers and the public. Its mandate is to initiate and interpret research, analyze policies, identify best practices, share information and facilitate dialogue. The organization’s research agenda is defined internally in response to current issues, reviewed by a research advisory committee, and approved by a board of directors.
