On March 1, 2023, the Canadian Marine Shipping Risk Forum (CMSRF) hosted a webinar on Marine Liability and Compensation: Who Pays for an Oil Spill in Canada and Beyond? to share about the work, ideas, concerns, questions and issues about the work of the Ship-source Oil Pollution Fund (SOPF).
We welcomed Ryan Gauvin, Legal Counsel for the SOPF, along with dozens of international participants from government, academia, Indigenous groups, and non-governmental organizations, in Canada and beyond. The session explored the Fund’s mandate to compensate victims of oil pollution damage (including costs incurred for preventive measures) caused by ships and how the Fund recovers costs from the polluters and other responsible parties.
