Vessel Traffic Forecast – St. Lawrence Great Lakes

Share

Clear Seas is undertaking a study to assess projected vessel traffic levels in the St. Lawrence Great Lakes corridor, building on our previous study of the Pacific Region.

Executive Summary

Clear Seas has commissioned Innovation Maritime in collaboration with Davis Consulting & Strategies to conduct a study to determine traffic projections through 2045 as a result of major resource and terminal expansion projects in Canada’s St. Lawrence-Great Lakes region.

Within the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes, multiple resource and terminal expansion projects with a marine shipping component have been approved or are currently under review. The changes in shipping traffic following approval of multiple projects could have a significant impact on the maritime shipping landscape in the St. Lawrence Seaway and beyond over the coming decades.

Building on the 2024 Vessel Traffic Forecast – Pacific Region study, the goal of this work is to provide information about the potential increases to support maritime sector participants in adapting to a rapidly evolving marine landscape.

In addition to creating vessel traffic projections for the St. Lawrence Great Lakes region, this study will document anticipated changes to the maritime environment associated with these projects, including potential impacts on escort tugs, pilotage, and pollution prevention and response capacity.

This assessment will build on the methodology used in the Pacific study and inform future applications in other Canadian maritime regions (Arctic and Atlantic).
