This assessment was referred to the Council by the Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping (Clear Seas).
(Ottawa – November 10, 2015) The Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mary R. Brooks as Chair of the Council’s newest expert panel assessment on The Social and Economic Value of Commercial Marine Shipping in Canada. This assessment was referred to the Council by the Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping (Clear Seas).
As Chair of the Council’s Expert Panel, Dr. Brooks will work with a multidisciplinary group of experts to address the following questions:
What is the social and economic value of commercial marine shipping to Canada and its regions*? How will global trends related to shipping affect future shipping activity in Canada?
Dr. Mary R. Brooks is Professor Emerita at Dalhousie University. She is the Editor of Elsevier’s Research in Transportation Business and Management, and serves as Vice Chair of the Marine Board of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC. She is well known for her work on ports and short sea shipping in Canada, the U.S., South America, and Australia. She was also a member of the Workshop Steering Committee for the Council’s workshop on the Risks of Marine Shipping in Canadian Waters.
The Council, under the guidance of its Scientific Advisory Committee, is finalizing recruitment of an expert panel to complete this important assessment. The panel will consist of experts from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to ensure the most authoritative, credible, and independent response to the questions. The composition of the panel will be approved by the Council’s Board of Governors.
