Clear Seas’ new Executive Director brings Canadian and International industry and research sector experience.
Vancouver, B.C., February 21, 2020 – The Board of Directors of Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping is pleased to announce that Paul Blomerus, PhD, will assume the position of Executive Director, in March 2020.
Dr. Blomerus is an internationally-experienced researcher and leader in innovation with a proven track record in industry as well as university research management. Most recently, as a Senior Advisor, Research and Industry Partnerships with the University of British Columbia (UBC), he developed two successful research clusters focused on clean energy and marine systems. Dr. Blomerus’ work at UBC provided him with important insights into reconciling economic development with environmental protection while respecting Indigenous rights.
Dr. Blomerus also developed a successful independent consulting practice specializing in clean energy and policy deployment helping government agencies understand the impact of technology on the transportation sector. As a thought leader, Dr. Blomerus is a published author on a range of marine shipping and transportation issues, including liquefied natural gas as a ship fuel to reduce transport emissions and the electrification of Canada’s freight rail sector.
Prior to joining UBC, Dr. Blomerus led large engineering and product development teams for Westport Innovations in Vancouver. He also worked at Rolls-Royce Aerospace holding senior positions in supply chain, intellectual property and customer relationship management. He brings extensive strategic business consultancy knowledge from his experience as an engagement manager with McKinsey & Co., in Chicago.
Dr. Blomerus holds a PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford where he worked as a researcher in an industry-backed research group. He was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and holds a Mechanical Engineering degree with first-class honours from the University of Cape Town.

Clear Seas is a not-for-profit independent research centre that provides impartial information on marine shipping in Canada to policy makers and the public. Its mandate is to initiate and interpret research, analyze policies, identify best practices, share information and facilitate dialogue. Clear Seas is equally funded by Transport Canada, Alberta Energy and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. In order to remain independent and impartial, Clear Seas operates at arm’s length from its funders. The organization’s research agenda is defined internally in response to current issues, reviewed by a research advisory committee, and approved by a board of directors. Clear Seas collaborates with Indigenous groups, stakeholders and experts to identify knowledge gaps, share results of existing studies, and facilitate new research to ensure decision makers have access to accurate, up-to-date information.
