Clear Seas, in collaboration with Ocean Networks Canada, will produce a quantitative and qualitative survey of commercial shipping traffic along coastlines of the Pacific region, and potentially expanding to other Canadian maritime regions. The project will identify potential and observed risks and hazards presented by large commercial vessels operating and transiting in B.C. offshore waters. This information can inform the development of options in different parts of Canada to enhance safe, efficient and environmentally sound maritime operations. The project will contract an existing 24/7 staffed operations centre to monitor real-time satellite and terrestrial Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals from these commercial vessels, and document elevated risk events for further analysis with the objective of developing risk mitigation policy recommendations for improved vessel safety systems in Canada.
