Commercial Shipping Issues in Canada’s North

Executive Summary

Clear Seas and MEOPAR selected a team led by Dr. Jackie Dawson of the University of Ottawa through a competitive process to receive a $194,000 research grant for a two-year study to examine marine shipping traffic in the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic.

Dr. Dawson’s project is expected to contribute to knowledge that will support planning and policy-making discussions regarding this sensitive region.

Through two sites located in the Northwest Passage, the project will study shipping trends over the past thirty years, identify potential risks and make recommendations for establishing shipping routes and best practices within the study area.

The project is expected to be complete in 2020.
